The first book on computer science was published in 1935 as an unpretentious treatment that attempted to merge the utility of algebraic methods with some insights on how computers worked at the time (the term ‘computation’ simply meant using an abacus). This approach had been used before in the German mathematician David Hilbert’s formalism where he introduced the idea of Hilbert’s ‘bipartite’ (or ‘computable’) algebra. The term ‘computer science’ was coined in 1952. The next year, Kurt Godel, in his paper ‘Completeness of the Informations [sic] Theory of Turing,’ was one of the first to show how logic could form a basis for a formal theory of computation.[25]Godel’s work showed that computing devices must be able to carry out unverified logical steps and that such devices are not possible. Godel showed this by giving an argument demonstrating that no process is capable of determining whether an algorithm will terminate or not, so there can be no algorithmic process as such. This is now known as Godel’s incomple teness theorem.[26]
