- Negative Marking: For a wrong answer to an MCQ, there will be negative marking. For a 1-mark MCQ, 1/3 will be deducted for a wrong answer. Likewise, for a 2-mark MCQ, 2/3 will be deducted for a wrong answer. There is no negative marking for wrong answers to MSQ and NAT questions. There is no partial marking for any question. What is GATE 2027

GATE stands for Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering. GATE 2027 is organized by IIT Madras on behalf of the National Coordination Board, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education. IISc and IITs run the exam jointly every year.

How to Apply

- Register on the GATE 2027 Online Application Processing System (GOAPS) on the official website. It helps to create a DigiLocker account first.
- Enter your personal details exactly as on your photo ID, plus your mobile number, email, and live facial details.
- You will get a unique Enrolment ID by email after you register.
- Log in again and fill the application form with your degree details, institute details, choice of test paper(s), and exam city.
- Upload your photograph and signature following the size rules.
- Upload a scanned copy of a valid photo ID.
- Upload your Category (SC/ST) certificate, PwD certificate/UDID, or Dyslexic certificate if any apply to you.
- Use 'Save and View Application' to check your form for mistakes before you go further.
- Pay the application fee online using internet banking, debit/credit card, wallet, or UPI.
- Click 'Submit and Proceed to Payment' and accept the declaration that your details are correct.
- Check your application status (Received, Under scrutiny, Accepted, Defect, or Rejected) on the portal. Fix any defect within the given time.
- Download your Admit Card from GOAPS once it is available. It will not be sent by post or email.

- A valid photo ID (Aadhaar-UID, Aadhaar Virtual ID, Passport, PAN card, Voter ID, Driving License, or any photo ID from Central or State Government)

- UDID (preferred) or PwD Certificate, if this applies to you, in PDF format
- Dyslexic Certificate, if this applies to you, in PDF format
Important Instructions to Remember
- Do not send hard copies of your form or documents to IIT Madras or any GATE office. Everything is online.
- Only one person can register with one email address. You cannot change your email or mobile number later.
- Your name on the form must match your photo ID exactly. Do not add titles like Mr. or Dr. before your name.
- Your photo must be color, 3.5 cm x 4.5 cm, not older than 3 months, white background, JPEG format, under 600 kB.
- Your signature must be in black or dark blue ink, done by you only, under 300 kB.
- Once you click 'Submit and Proceed to Payment', you cannot change your application. Apply well before the closing date.

Exam Pattern

GATE 2027 offers 30 test papers. Each paper has 65 questions for a total of 100 marks. You get 3 hours to finish the paper.
- General Aptitude: 10 questions for 15 marks, in every paper
- Subject questions: 55 questions making up the remaining marks
- PwD (Person with Disability) candidates get 20 extra minutes per hour as compensatory time

Negative Marking
For a wrong answer to an MCQ, marks are deducted. A wrong answer to a 1-mark MCQ loses 1/3 mark. A wrong answer to a 2-mark MCQ loses 2/3 mark. There is no negative marking for MSQ or NAT questions, and no partial marking for any question.
