What Is This Recruitment About

Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS) has released a notification for the JNV Class IX Lateral Entry Selection Test 2027-28. This test is for students who want to join Class IX in a Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) for the academic session 2027-28.

You can apply for this test only if you are currently studying Class VIII in the district where the JNV is located. Admission is given only against seats that are vacant in Class IX.

How to Apply

Follow these steps to complete your online application today.

1. Read the notification cum prospectus fully and check that you meet the eligibility criteria.
2. Go to the NVS website, www.navodaya.gov.in, and open the online application form.
3. Keep your documents ready as soft copies in JPG format, sized between 10 and 100 kb, before you start.
4. Fill in your basic details: State, District (residence and study), Aadhaar number, Class VIII study details, APAAR ID/PEN, and address.
5. Upload your photograph along with the signatures of both you and your parent.
6. Submit your application. You can do this from a desktop, laptop, mobile, or tablet.
7. If you need help, visit the help desk at your nearest JNV with your documents for free assistance in uploading the application.
8. Download your admit card free of cost from the application portal before the selection test.

Documents Required

• Birth Certificate issued by a competent Government Authority, as proof of date of birth
• Residence Certificate of the parent, for the district where the JNV is located
• Copy of Aadhaar Card of the candidate
• Certificate from the competent authority of District Administration for Rural quota, if applicable
• Category or community certificate (SC/ST/OBC as per the central list), if applicable
• Divyang certificate or medical-UDID certificate signed by the Chief Medical Officer, if applicable
• Transfer Certificate from your current school, needed after admission is confirmed and countersigned by DEO/BEO (District/Block Education Officer)

Important Instructions

• The last date of registration is 30-09-2026.
• Photograph and signatures must be in JPG format, sized between 10 and 100 kb.
• No request for change in Area, Gender, Category, or JNV choice will be accepted.
• A correction window opens for two days after the last date, to fix information in only selected fields. After that, no changes are allowed.
• Only a Blue or Black Ball Point Pen can be used on the OMR sheet. A pencil is strictly not allowed.
• There is no negative marking, and no re-evaluation or re-totaling of marks.

Application Fee

No application fee is required for any candidate. This test is free to apply for.

Once you are admitted, a separate monthly fee called Vidyalaya Vikas Nidhi (VVN) applies. VVN is a development fund fee that students pay to the school after admission, not to apply for the test.

• VVN fee is Rs.600 per month for most students.
• For wards of Government employees who are not exempted, VVN is Rs.1500 per month, or the actual Children Education Allowance received, whichever is less.

Eligibility

You must meet all the conditions below to apply for this test.

• You must be a bonafide resident of the district where the JNV is located.
• You must be studying Class VIII during the Academic Session 2026-27, in a Government or Government-recognized school of that same district.
• Your date of birth must be between 1st May 2012 and 31st July 2014 (both days included).
• You must not have already passed Class VIII in an earlier session.
• You must be an Indian National, studying Class VIII in India, in the district where you are seeking admission.

Educational Qualification

Candidate must be bonafide resident of and studying Class VIII during Academic Session 2026-27 in a Govt./Govt. recognized school of the district where the JNV is located and admission is sought

Date of Birth must be between 1st May 2012 and 31st July 2014 (both days inclusive); candidate must not have already passed Class VIII in a previous session; candidate must be an Indian National studying Class VIII in India in the district concerned

Exam Pattern

The Selection Test is an objective type test, checked through OMR (Optical Mark Recognition) sheets. You mark your answers by filling circles on the sheet.

• Total marks: 100, total questions: 100.
• Duration of the exam is 2½ hours.
• Divyang (disabled) candidates get 50 extra minutes.
• There is no negative marking.
• Use only a Blue or Black Ball Point Pen on the OMR sheet. A pencil is strictly not allowed.
• There is no re-evaluation or re-totaling of marks after the result.

Syllabus

The test covers four subjects. Below are the topics for each subject, as given in the notification.

English

• Comprehension (Unseen Passage), Word and Sentence Structure, Spelling, Rearranging jumbled words, Passivation, Degrees of comparison, Modal auxiliaries, Prepositions, Tense forms, Reported speech.

Hindi

• वर्ण विचार / वर्तनी विवेक, शब्द-भेद (स्रोत/उत्पत्ति), पर्याय / विलोम, शब्द विवेक, पद भेद की पहचान, पद परिचय, अशुद्ध वाक्य को शुद्ध करना, वाक्य रचनांतरण, मुहावरे, लोकोक्तियाँ, अपठित बोधात्मक प्रश्न।

Mathematics

• Rational Numbers, Squares and Square Roots, Cubes and Cube Roots, Exponents and Powers, Direct and Inverse Proportions, Comparing Quantities (Percentage, Profit and Loss, Discount, Simple and Compound Interest), Algebraic Expressions and Identities including Factorization, Linear Equations in One Variable, Understanding Quadrilaterals, Mensuration, Data Handling.

General Science

• Crop Production and Management, Microorganisms: Friend and Foe, Coal and Petroleum, Combustion and Flame, Conservation of Plants and Animals, Reproduction in Animals, Reaching the Age of Adolescence, Force and Pressure, Friction, Sound, Chemical Effects of Electric Current, Some Natural Phenomena, Light.
